마하 와찌랄롱꼰(라마 10세·66) 태국 국왕이 대관식 다음날인 5일 처음으로 국민과 만났다. 대표적 불교 국가인 태국의 현재 차크리 왕조의 모든 태국 국왕은 ‘라마’로 불린다. 라마는 힌두교 최고의 여신 비슈누의 아바타로 전해진다.

마하 와찌랄롱꼰 국왕은 이날 오후 16명의 병사가 멘 가마에 올라탄 뒤 왕궁 인근 3개 사원을 돌며 사원에 안치된 부처상에 절을 올렸다.

약 7㎞ 거리에 달하는 이 날 행진에는 쁘라윳 짠오차 총리 등 군부정권 인사들과 수티다 왕비도 참여했다.

이날 한낮 방콕 시내 온도는 38도를 넘어섰지만, 아침 일찍부터 국왕의 상징색인 노란색 상의를 입고 행진이 예정된 길가에 자리 잡았던 시민들은 국왕이 탄 가마가 지나갈 때 태국 국기와 왕실기를 흔들며 환영했다. 일부 시민은 국왕을 향해 엎드려 절을 하며 경의를 표하기도 했다. 태국인들에게 국왕은 힌두신 비슈누의 환생으로 여겨진다.

태국 정부는 앞서 이날 국왕의 첫 행진을 보기 위해 태국 전역에서 20만명가량이 모일 것으로 추산했다.

고(故) 푸미폰 아둔야뎃 전 국왕의 대관식 이후 69년 만에 열려 대부분의 태국민에게는 이번이 첫 대관식인 만큼, 많은 태국인이 이를 직접 보기를 원했다고 현지 언론들은 전했다.

태국 정부는 보다 많은 시민이 대관식에 참여할 수 있도록 버스와 열차를 무료로 운행했다.

앞서 국왕은 이날 오전 왕실 가족에게 새로운 왕실 작위를 부여했다. 국왕은 이 자리에서 선왕 푸미폰 아둔야뎃 전 국왕의 부인이자 자신의 모친인 시리킷(87) 왕비에게 왕대비 칭호를 부여했다. 그러나 국왕의 누나인 우본랏 라차깐야 공주는 모습을 보이지 않았다고 외신들은 전했다.

우본랏 공주는 총선 전인 지난 2월 현실 정치에 참여하지 않는 왕실의 전통을 깨고 탁신계 정당인 타이락사찻당 총리 후보로 지명됐지만, 국왕이 칙령을 통해 반대하면서 없던 일이 됐다.



마하 와찌랄롱꼰 국왕은 사흘 일정의 대관식 마지막 날인 6일에는 왕궁 발코니에서 국민에게 인사한 뒤 방콕 주재 외교사절단의 알현을 받는다.
