호날두와 메시의 월드컵 ‘세기의 대결’, 끝내 이뤄지지 않았다

크리스티나우 호날두(포르투갈)와 리오넬 메시(아르헨티나)의 슈퍼스타 대결은 끝내 이뤄지지 않았다. 두 선수 모두 8강 진출에 실패했다.

아르헨티나는 지난 30일(이하 한국시간) 러시아 카잔 아레나에서 열린 2018 러시아 월드컵 16강 프랑스와의 경기에서 3-4로 패했다.

프랑스의 샛별 킬리앙 음바페가 두 골을 터뜨리는 동안 메시는 한 골도 넣지 못했다.

포르투갈 역시 소치 피시트 스타디움에서 열린 16강 경기에서 우루과이에 1-2로 졌다.

에디손 카바니가 두 골을 넣은 우루과이는 이날 포르투갈의 주포 호날두를 무득점으로 묶었다.

만일 아르헨티나와 포르투갈이 나란히 승리했다면 월드컵 최초로 메시와 호날두의 맞대결이 성사될 수 있었다.

특히 두 선수는 모두 조별리그가 끝나면 침묵하는 징크스를 극복하지 못했다. 메시는월드컵 16강전 이후로는 8경기에서 23차례 슛을 시도했지만 한 번도 골을 넣지 못했다. 호날두 역시 6경기에 출전해 25차례 슈팅에도 득점하지 못했다.

한편 우루과이와 프랑스는 오는 6일 밤 4강 진출을 놓고 격돌한다.
